28th October 1914

Here are some views of the Neuve Chapelle area fought over in today's episode.

This is a view of the church that Ahmadullah perched on to signal to Mickey. I'm starting with it as it's the landmark in some of the other pictures.

And this is the church at 700 yards distance from the north, approximately where the Lahore Division commenced their attack.

And this is much closer, just on the outskirts of the village and within range of everything the Germans had.

The view from that spot to the north. I think it was at this point the flatness of the land and the absence of cover really sank in for me.

Outside the town is the Neuve Chapelle Memorial,  often called The Indian Memorial. Many thanks to the unknown bearer of those two red carnations.

And poignancy on top of poignancy, there's a panel recording the names of those Indians who died in German POW camps and were buried at Zehrensdorf near Berlin. Here are some names from the 9th Bhopalis, the 'Bo-Peeps'.
