RADIO COMEDY

Jokes on the wireless. Where I started, and I gravitate back to it still.
Live Comedies on BBC Radio 4...

...included this wonderful chance to dramatise George Melly's comic reminiscences, "Owning Up". Joe Dunlop adapted, I produced and directed. The BBC has resisted the chance to repeat this - it was relentlessly smutty as I recall.

Other shows have included "Not Today, Thank You" with The Simpson's Harry Shearer and "With Nobbs On", David Nobbs telling the story of his comedy-writing life. What a very nice man.

And these comedians...

...and I should immediately say that I've grabbed this picture off the internet because it includes two people I've worked with - not that I've ever written for HIGNFY. But Radio 1 gave me chances to work as a one-off producer (and often contributor) for Paul Merton, Eddie Izzard (pictured), Lenny Henry, Angus Deayton, Vic Reeves & Bob Mortimer, Sean Hughes, Harry Enfield & Paul Whitehouse - I loved it. Plus studio guests - Robin Williams, Spike Milligan, Stephen Fry & Hugh Laurie, Ben Elton, it really was great I tells yer.

Comedies with Curtains For Radio

This pic is for "The Pickerskill Reports" with Sheridan Smith and Ian McDiarmid, but working with Andrew McGibbon has also let me work with Phil Cornwell, Daisy Haggard and Tony Gardner on "The Cornwell Estate", and Andrew himself on "Wheeler's Fortunes". We've also done "Rory Bremner’s International Satirists", featuring Rory Bremner. And some International Satirists.

BBC Radio 1

Ten years working in the say-it-and-it's-gone world of live radio, probably not all of it 100% brilliant. I learned how to work hard and do the extra little bit, ask that one extra question, all that stuff right here. Thank you to Simon Bates, Steve Wright, Jakki Brambles and all the others. And for the chances to work with Richard Easter and Jane Bussmann, both comic geniuses.
